New coach learned game from legends

Published August 7, 2007

Greg Nix learned to coach the game of basketball from a pair of legends – his father, Wendell, and Q.K. “Dusty” Carter.

“I always just appreciate both of them. That was my school of basketball,” said Nix, who has succeeded Lance Kitchens as the varsity boys coach at Boaz High School.

The Boaz City School System approved Nix’s hiring at its Thursday night meeting.

Carter, a member of the Alabama High School Hall of Fame, compiled a 714-303 record in 38 years as a head coach, including 24 at Scottsboro.

He carried seven teams to the state tournament, winning a state title at Scottsboro in 1967.

Wendell Nix played for Carter at Scottsboro. When Nix was coaching at Geraldine in the 1980s, Carter served as a volunteer assistant coach.
