SCOTTSBORO - Longtime high school basketball coach QK “Dusty” Carter, a 1993 inductee into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame, died Friday
My Memories of Coach Carter, as we called him. My first encounter with him as coach was in the 9th grade and the last I remember seeing him was in the 11th grade in 1990. We thought he was ancient back then but his words seemed like pure basketball gospel and most certainly bigger than life. He would talk basketball talk and encouraged us to give our all but what stuck with me most was the life lessons he instilled in me and the other boys. It was funny, he always would sit in a chair on the stage overlooking us playing and maybe that is a big reason he seemed almost transcendental. I remember Coach Nix introducing him to us and telling us of the great championships in basketball , he led his former teams to. It was most certainly awe inspiring, but as much as he told us to “hussle” and to “give it our all”, and shared with us the secret jewels of his vast knowledge in basketball, he also would share an equal amount of personal insights into life. I specifically remember him telling us to be good people, to love God, respect our elders, and to learn to work hard on the court so that it would translate into us being good providers for our families later in life. I know I speak for my teammates as well that also surely miss this legendary man (not just coach), when I say, bye Coach Carter, we love you and thanks for all you taught us, and we will see you on the other side…
